This beetle has “antlers” and “fur” but it wasn’t the most surprising fauna I found while walking the Langeberg. I have no idea why this section of the Rim of Africa presented the weirdest finds for fauna — but I enjoyed having it there. The beetle above was found on a sign post for a hiking trail the first day of walking. Later that afternoon, we found this little snake.
The following day I found this caterpillar, one I have certainly never seen anything like it before.
And once we dropped from the mountains towards the town of Montagu, I found a crab! I might not have been in the mountains, but to find a crab this far in land completely surprised me.
And the last thing I spotted before we entered Montagu was the cutest thing on the Rim of Africa. My proof of its cuteness is in the swarming of cameras that ensued once this shy guy was spotted.
