My ears ring in the overpowering silence. They’re in pain from straining to reach out to any fleeting sound to grasp onto. Is that a bird? Wind? Plane? Anything but nothing. I come across a monument to the human need to ruin perfectly fine mountains. I take a break, make lunch, gulp silence. It is only once I am done eating I question: Did I unwittingly have lunch at this lonely human marker because am attracted to every sign of fellow humans in the landscape, even if it is horribly obstructive?
